Jan Kjellström was killed in a road accident in January 1967. Jan had been highly influential, teaching the pioneers of orienteering in this country and the Jan Kjellström international competition was instituted in his memory that year, by the English Orienteering Association. In 2010 the event returns to the South West again.
In the coming months the event will be previewed here, beginning with the first day's competition.
Bicton is a small Parish of about 290 people. The predominant building is Bicton Park, an 18th century house often visited by royalty and was formerly the home of the Rolle family, it is now an agricultural college. The estate belongs to the Clinton family and is run by Devon Clinton Estates.
The gardens were created by Andre le Notre who was responsible for the gardens at Versailles. There are three terraces of lawns with formal flower beds an statues, and at the lowest level a pond with a central fountain. To one side is the American Garden, established in the 1830's with rocky outcrops and some interesting trees. There is also a shell house made of flints and with shells from around the world. The Arboretum and Pinetum have over 1,000 trees and these include 25 champion trees, the largest of their kind in the British isles. There is also a narrow gauge railway which takes passengers on a journey past the lake, through the Pinetum, past the Italian Garden and the Hermitage Garden. There is a museum of the countryside.
Places to visit in the locality include part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site, which starts at Exmouth and goes through to Lyme Regis in Dorset. A National Trust property worth seeing is the sixteen sided house, A La Ronde, on the outskirts of Exmouth. There are many pretty villages and towns which are worth exploring.
