British Orienteering has a public liability insurance policy., If you are coaching on behalf of your club it is important to check that your activities are covered by the policy. All club coaching activities which require public liability insurance have to be registered with British Orienteering prior to the event.

Similarly, the insurance cover requires completion of a risk assessment for the activity.

How will my coaching activity be registered with British Orienteering?

Your club will have a nominated person, sometimes known as the fixtures secretary to register activities, including club coaching, with British Orienteering. As soon as you agree to provide coaching for your club it is advisable to contact the nominated officer to ensure your activity is registered. The activity should be registered as early as possible, for publicity/information purposes as well as insurance reasons. A landowner is likely to be most unhappy if he/she thinks you're out planning activities without insurance protection.

Do I need to be a qualified coach to be covered by the policy?

Yes. Only British Orienteering licensed coaches are covered by the policy. British Orienteering members who hold a relevant coaching award may apply for a license. You will also need to sign a coach's code of conduct, hold a relevant first aid qualification and complete an enhanced CRB disclosure on behalf of British Orienteering.
